What are Kathleen's Favorite Things ? Wildlife images fused into fine art! We will meet at Ditore Glass Works on Sunday evening to organize for the zoo on Monday. On Tuesday we will download images from digital cameras, look up information on our wildlife and then make artist study images from the gathered information. Color, light, shadow, landscape, details, character.... all areas explored to create vitreous painting studies in glass. Wednesday in the studio and then Thursday back in the field on another safari. TBA. Friday and Saturday back in the studio for more glass artist studies from the field. One does not have to be able to draw to take this workshop. Just use your eyes. Stop, pause and listen. Wildlife might be watching you. We will all work on improving our observation skills so that the information we retain in our soul's comes out thorough our hands and gives our art work life.

Private Lessons

Starting in the fall 2008 Kathleen will offer private lessons to previous students that want to work on more extensive projects. This will be done on a one to one basis at her studio in Montana. Length of session and pricing will be structured on an individual basis pending the advanced project or techniques the student wants to accomplish.

Workshop Details

Listed below is a composite of the workshops currently offered by Kathleen Sheard. As Kathleen's work is currently going through a transition all workshops will tend to be a bit modified in the next presentation.

Wildlife Art in Glass Workshop

In this workshop students will use the micro mosaic technique to create artist studies that are detailed portraits of wildlife art. Landscapes and portraits are welcomed to be explored as well. The workshop is 2 days and one evening session. The first day is an introduction, demonstration and building the first project; the second day is building a larger project. As time permits color and detail studies will be added.

Phase 2 - Wildlife Art in Glass

This workshop is for students who have previously taken the beginning Wildlife Art in Glass. It is adapted from the workshop I teach at the Corning Museum Glass Studio where I teach basic techniques and go right into multiple piece/layers. One study will be to do multiple layers with multiple firings to increase depth on existing pieces. The second project will take multiple pre fused pieces (2 to 4 depending on complexity) mixed with frit, and incorporate parts into one finished piece. Slumping of a piece could also be an option. As time permits detailed studies of specific areas of a face and/or additional color reaction studies. 4 days plus evening session 2 days later.

The Dimensional Colors of Wildlife

This workshop introduced in the fall of 2005, will incorporate parts of the previous format but expand to include color reaction, color mix, chemical reaction, shadow, light, and details. We will ask the questions - "Just how do we get depth of field in a flat piece anyway?" Does a black bear have to be black to know that it is a black bear? Does an African lion have to be shades of amber? Can the lion be turquoise and orange... and still be a lion? Emphasis on technique and exploration through glass frit artist studies which will help to make a larger project a stronger statement.

Working on a variety of artist studies, students will mix and create new colors. Depth of shadows will be enhanced with the use of frit and sheet glass. Detailed studies of the eyes, ears and noses of wildlife (or a person) will be explored. Color studies blending transparent, transparent and opal, hot and cool, dark and light glass, will be an eye opener. A demonstration of how to build from multiple pre-fused pieces will be shown. Students will have time to do "parts" of a multiple piece in the workshop but will have to complete the overall project in their own studio space. (this workshop is flexible for a 4 to 6 day class)

NEW WORKSHOP: Wild In Glass - From Field to Fuse

In this workshop, you will learn the process Kathleen Sheard uses in her own studio to create her miniature wall pieces and larger vitreous wall paintings.

The new workshop includes studio time and something extra. Part of the workshop is spent in Wildlife Museums, Zoos or Aquariums. Then, it's out to the field, be it forest, ocean or refuge. The first class day will be in the field where you will take field notes and sketch or photograph subjects of interest. When possible, the class will be joined by biologists, naturalists or other knowledgeable personnel to provide information about the area and the flora and fauna you can expect to see.

From a subjective viewpoint, you will make observations about the activities in which the wildlife are involved, how they move, their stance and posture, and the surrounding environment that supports and shelters them. You also will be encouraged to research your subject to gain additional information to round out your knowledge about your chosen subjects.

Back into the studio, you will do artist studies on your field observations--wildlife or landscape--while you study color, light and shadow. As time permits one or two other forays will be made into the field during the week and additional glass studies done.

From notes and sketches to artist studies to large pieces, this workshop instructs you on the same step-by-step process used by Kathleen to produce her wildlife vitreous paintings.
