Upcoming Workshops

Kathleen's Studio in Montana - In conjunction with the 2nd Annual Artists Along the Bitterroot Tour held June 5 and 6, 2010. Kathleen and other artists from the tour will be offering workshops in their own studios the middle of July.

Wildlife in Glass will be held July 17 and 18 from 10 to 5:30 and on Tuesday evening, July 20 from 6:30 to 9PM.

In this workshop students will use the micro mosaic technique to create artist studies that are detailed portraits of wildlife art. Landscapes and portraits are welcomed to be explored as well.

Students are asked to bring pictures of wildlife they would like to do. In addition detailed photos of eyes, nose, mouth, ear recommended. Small tools such as an X-Acto like knife, small rubber tipped brush (color or clay shapers - black is the hardest rubber - 1/8 and 3/16" or 1/4" Kathleen's favorite sizes),tweezers, variety of measuring spoons, grossing/breaking pliers, glass cutter, safety glasses and other small pointy or texture making tools/objects. This class is designed for people that have some previous glass cutting and fusing experience or by consent of the instructor.

The workshop is 2 days and one evening session. The first day is an introduction, demonstration and building the first project; the second day is building a larger project. As time permits color studies will be included. The evening session is critique of the projects, slides and going over firing schedules and a general question/answer session. I have found this to be a great educational tool. In the evening session we usually bring finger foods to share and Kathleen provides a beverage.

Workshop held in artist's own studio. Limit 8 students. Students are to bring sack lunch for Saturday and Sunday sessions. The home, studio and all property are a smoke free environment. Students will be asked to sign a waiver prior to participating in the workshop. Deposit required with registration and final payment for workshop due 2 weeks prior to workshop starting. A Pre-Workshop Letter will be sent to each student after registration to expand on what they need to bring.

For this first time offering this workshop through the AAB Studio Tour cost will be approximately 25% off. Regular cost of this workshop - $395 plus. This workshop 2010 will be $325. Includes workshop time in studio, materials and firings.

Workshop Details

Listed below is a composite of the workshops currently offered by Kathleen Sheard. As Kathleen's work is currently going through a transition all workshops will tend to be a bit modified in the next presentation.

Wildlife Art in Glass Workshop

In this workshop students will use the micro mosaic technique to create artist studies that are detailed portraits of wildlife art. Landscapes and portraits are welcomed to be explored as well. The workshop is 2 days and one evening session. The first day is an introduction, demonstration and building the first project; the second day is building a larger project. As time permits color and detail studies will be added.

Phase 2 - Wildlife Art in Glass

This workshop is for students who have previously taken the beginning Wildlife Art in Glass. It is adapted from the workshop I teach at the Corning Museum Glass Studio where I teach basic techniques and go right into multiple piece/layers. One study will be to do multiple layers with multiple firings to increase depth on existing pieces. The second project will take multiple pre fused pieces (2 to 4 depending on complexity) mixed with frit, and incorporate parts into one finished piece. Slumping of a piece could also be an option. As time permits detailed studies of specific areas of a face and/or additional color reaction studies. 4 days plus evening session 2 days later.

The Dimensional Colors of Wildlife

This workshop introduced in the fall of 2005, will incorporate parts of the previous format but expand to include color reaction, color mix, chemical reaction, shadow, light, and details. We will ask the questions - "Just how do we get depth of field in a flat piece anyway?" Does a black bear have to be black to know that it is a black bear? Does an African lion have to be shades of amber? Can the lion be turquoise and orange... and still be a lion? Emphasis on technique and exploration through glass frit artist studies which will help to make a larger project a stronger statement.

Working on a variety of artist studies, students will mix and create new colors. Depth of shadows will be enhanced with the use of frit and sheet glass. Detailed studies of the eyes, ears and noses of wildlife (or a person) will be explored. Color studies blending transparent, transparent and opal, hot and cool, dark and light glass, will be an eye opener. A demonstration of how to build from multiple pre-fused pieces will be shown. Students will have time to do "parts" of a multiple piece in the workshop but will have to complete the overall project in their own studio space. (this workshop is flexible for a 4 to 6 day class)

Wild In Glass - From Field to Fuse

In this workshop, you will learn the process Kathleen Sheard uses in her own studio to create her miniature wall pieces and larger vitreous wall paintings.

The new workshop includes studio time and something extra. Part of the workshop is spent in Wildlife Museums, Zoos or Aquariums. Then, it's out to the field, be it forest, ocean or refuge. The first class day will be in the field where you will take field notes and sketch or photograph subjects of interest. When possible, the class will be joined by biologists, naturalists or other knowledgeable personnel to provide information about the area and the flora and fauna you can expect to see.

From a subjective viewpoint, you will make observations about the activities in which the wildlife are involved, how they move, their stance and posture, and the surrounding environment that supports and shelters them. You also will research your subject to gain additional information to round out your knowledge about your chosen subjects.

Back into the studio, you will do artist studies on your field observations-wildlife or landscape-while you study color, light and shadow.

As time permits one or two other forays will be made into the field during the week and additional glass studies done.

From notes and sketches to artist studies to large pieces, this workshop instructs you on the same step-by-step process used by Kathleen to produce her wildlife vitreous paintings.

Beyond bringing regular glass tools suggestions are camera, a lap top computer if you have one, small day pack, binoculars, sketch pad, pencils or other art medium for field, small note pad for field notes, sun screen, bug repellent and a hat. Adventure is a foot! Prerequisite to have a basic knowledge of frit fusing or the consent of the instructor.

Private Lessons

Starting in the fall 2008 Kathleen will offer private lessons to previous students that want to work on more extensive projects. This will be done on a one to one basis at her studio in Montana. Length of session and pricing will be structured on an individual basis pending the advanced project or techniques the student wants to accomplish.

Kathleen now accepts VISA and Mastercard payments.
